Gas work requires separate licensing in Tasmania, and getting it wrong has more serious consequences than a leaking water pipe.
What is gas fitting?
Gas fitting covers any work on gas installations and appliances connected to the gas supply — installing or connecting gas hot water systems, cooktops, heaters, and barbecue points, as well as inspecting and pressure-testing gas lines.
Do I need a licensed plumber?
In Tasmania, yes — any work on a gas installation beyond the appliance side of the flexible connection must be done by a licensed gasfitter. Most licensed plumbers hold a gasfitting licence as well, but not all. If you're booking a plumber for gas work, ask upfront whether they're licensed.
The risks of unlicensed gas work
A faulty gas connection can lead to gas leaks, fire, or carbon monoxide buildup. Carbon monoxide is odourless and colourless. Your home insurer won't pay out for damage caused by unlicensed gas work, and any gas installations will need compliance certificates when you sell the property.
Can you smell gas?
Don't switch any electrical switches, don't use your phone inside the house, don't light any flames. Leave the property and call us from outside. We treat gas smell callouts as emergencies and will get there fast.
