Low water pressure can indicate several different things. Here's how to diagnose the common causes.

Check whether it's one tap or all taps

If it's just one tap, the issue is likely local — a partially closed isolation valve, a blockage in the tap body, or limescale in the aerator (the small mesh screen at the tap tip). Cleaning the aerator often fixes a single low-pressure tap immediately. If it's all taps, you're looking at a different set of causes.

Pressure limiting valve (PLV)

Most Hobart homes have a pressure limiting valve (PLV) on the main water supply line that has a lifespan of roughly 10 years. A failed PLV can restrict too much (low pressure throughout) or fail open (causing high pressure and water hammer — banging in the pipes when you shut off taps). A failed PLV is one of the most common causes of house-wide low pressure in Hobart and is a straightforward job to replace.

Other causes

A partially closed stopcock after plumbing work, or a hidden pipe leak underground or in a wall. A telltale sign of a hidden leak is a water meter that keeps ticking with all taps off. Occasionally low pressure is from TasWater's end — ask a neighbour before calling a plumber.
