An annual check of the key plumbing items in your home takes about 20 minutes and can catch failing flexi hoses, slow leaks, and water pressure issues before they become serious.
Under every sink
Check the flexi hoses for rust, corrosion, or cracking. Check the P-trap for drips or mineral buildup. Run the tap and watch for slow drips at the connections. If the cabinet smells damp or you find staining, that's a sign of a slow leak.
Toilets
Put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern and wait 15 minutes without flushing. If the colour appears in the bowl, your cistern is leaking — a common, easy-to-fix problem that wastes a surprising amount of water.
Hot water system
Check the temperature pressure relief valve — there should be a small drip from the pipe running down the side of the tank. If there's a steady stream or none at all, the valve may need replacement. Check the base of the tank for rust or pooling water.
Water pressure and outdoors
Low pressure everywhere can indicate a failing pressure limiting valve (PLV), which has a lifespan of roughly 10 years. Check garden tap washers — they wear out faster than indoor taps. Look for damp spots in the garden that could indicate a leaking underground pipe.
